Guidelines For Sharing Hibiscus Cuttings
There are generally three ways to take Hibiscus cuttings:
1. Tip cuttings: Tip cuttings are usually taken from the soft, green tips of a branch. They are between 3″ to 6″ long and retain the first two leaves of the cutting. These tip cuttings are then dusted with rooting hormone and struck in a variety of soil/amended mediums. Mist with water/fungicide mix until rooted. Warmth encourages the process.
2. Greenwood Cuttings: Greenwood cuttings are a bit longer than tip cuttings (7-10″) and are thicker (1/4 – 3/8″) in diameter. They retain from 4 to 8 nodes and retain the soft tips of the stem. They are dusted with rooting hormone and struck in a variety of soil/amended mediums. Mist with water/fungicide until rooted. Warmth encourages the process.
3. Semi-Hardwood cuttings: Semi-hardwood cuttings have more green stem and a bit of woody stem at the base. Cuttings are about the size and diameter of a pencil. They retain from 4 to 8 nodes. They are dusted with rooting hormone and struck in a variety of soil/amended mediums. Mist with water/fungicide until rooted. Warmth encourages the process.
Greenwood cuttings, taken and shipped quickly are a good bet, although any of the cuttings listed above can be safely shipped if packaged carefully and shipped quickly. Cuttings should be cut on the diagonal, dusted with a bit of rooting hormone, wrapped loosely in newspaper and boxed. No padded envelopes please. Priority Mail from the USPS has a variety of smal to medium boxes that may be used for shipping these kinds of cuttings.

Make sure your cuttings come from healthy plants! If leaves are yellow or have brown or black spots, please do not offer them! They need Medicare, not loving care. Make sure they are bug free. No hitchhikers, please! So, be a good guy and send the quality of cutting you would like to receive.
